In 1952, Jhoon Rhee introduced Tae Kwon Do in the United
States in San Marcos, Texas. By 1955, the major Korean
Dojangs agreed on the basic tenements of Tae Kwon Do. In
1960, Master Fred Simon began his martial arts training
under the direction of Jhoon Rhee, and received his
Black Belt in 1964.
Sensei Chambers began his martial arts training in 1979
in Beaumont, Texas. In 1992, Sensei Chambers began
training under Master Simon. Sensei Chambers also opened
his first martial arts school (Sour Lake Karate School)
in Beaumont in 1992. In 1993, he began also teaching at
two locations in the Houston area and had eight students
qualify for the Amateur Organization of Karate (AOK)
State Championships.
In 1995, Sensei Chambers opened his first school in the
Houston area, and was later joined by Sensei Jamie
McCleskey. North Side Karate had fifteen students
qualify for the AOK State Championships. In 1996, North
Side Karate became a sanctioned AOK tournament producer,
sponsoring the highly successful Christmas in July
Extravaganza. Sensei chambers opened a second school
location in New Caney, Texas. Amazingly, NSK had
thirty-three students qualify for the AOK State
Championships. Sensei Chambers also won his first AOK
Instructor of the Year Award and his 2nd
Degree Black Belt.
Between 1997 and 1998, North Side Karate experienced
tremendous growth and saw the opening of North Side
Karate's Aldine's Tae Kwon Do & Self Defense. The system
was blessed to have many dedicated parent volunteers who
helped Sensei Chambers take the school to new heights in
martial arts training and in competitive events.
Outstanding parent volunteers include long-time members
Carolyn Davis, Vera Maxie, Mrs. Maxwell, Brenda Felton,
and Edward Hart. The system also included many great
students who helped train underbelt students in the art
and the North Side System. These students included
George Ramos, Brittany Maxwell, Abdul Sayed, and Jecobie
Gilder, just to name a few. In 1998, North Side Karate
had sixty students qualify for the AOK State
Championships and Sensei Chambers was elected to the AOK
Executive Committee. Sensei Chambers also received his
first AOK Greek Award as the top overall Black Belt
competitor in the State of Texas.
In 1999, North Side Karate began offering outside
training programs to HISD schools among others and
qualified over fifty students for the state title. The
year 2000 proved to be yet another banner year for the
North Side Karate school system as fifty-five students
qualified for state, Sensei Chambers won his 2nd
consecutive Greek Award, and was selected to host the
2002 AOK State Championship Tournament. In 2001, the
system opened branch schools at seven different local
campuses and Sense Chambers won his 3rd
consecutive Greek Award. Sensei Chambers solicited the
assistance of 5-time Parent of the Year Award winner,
Edward Hart to help plan and coordinate the 2002 AOK
State Championships.
In 2002, North Side Karate launched
its first ever website and set itself apart from other
martial arts programs with an abundance of information
to assist students and parents. Under the leadership of
Sensei Chambers and Edward Hart, North Side Karate held
one of the best State Championship Tournaments ever
held. The event introduced various technologies to
advance the experience of parents and competitors. The
event featured awards that included the standard AOK
medals and a plaque for all state champions, a dedicated
child care area near the competition arena, closed
circuit broadcast of the event, and various other
presentation technology during the tournament and the
accompanying banquet. Sensei Chambers again won the
AOK's Instructor of the Year Award, and his partner
Edward Hart won the very first AOK Walt Mason Award as
the State Volunteer of the Year.
In 2003, several North Side students won national titles
from various martial arts organizations, and three
students won SuperGrands World Championship Titles. The
year also saw the return of Mr. George Droddy to the
system as a Black Belt instructor. In 2004, the school
once again saw exponential growth at its main facility
and its outside programs. Sensei Chambers earned his 4th
Degree Black Belt in 2005.
Between 2006 and 2007, North Side Karate grew
substantially, particularly through its outside
programs, which grew from 25 to 62, including seven
different school districts. In 2008, North Side Karate
moved its main location from its familiar spot on
Airline Drive near West Road to its current location on
Greens Parkway. The new facility provides more than
double the space and several other amenities than the
previous location.
Today, North Side Karate is still thriving through
Sensei Chambers leadership and the valiant efforts of
several NSK Black Belts who now have day-to-day martial
arts training responsibility. These instructors include
long-time students Derick Quick, Antonio Anderson, and
George Droddy. The system still produces a very large
number of state qualifiers.
